Sukhothai est une petite ville du Bas-Nord de la Thaïlande, principalement connue pour les ruines de l'ancienne ville de Sukhothai. Le nom se traduit par "l'aube du bonheur". La province est située à l'extrémité inférieure de la région nord, à 427 km au nord de Bangkok. Cette vieille ville, inscrite au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO en 1991, a été transformée en parc historique dans lequel certains de ses bâtiments, autrefois enfouis sous une masse de végétation, ont été restaurés ou reconstruits. Au cœur du parc, la ville royale, entourée de trois murs concentriques, abrite les principaux monuments, tels que le Wat Mahatat, placé au centre de la ville conformément à la cosmogonie brahmanique. Wat Mahatat a été fondé, selon une inscription, dans les premières années du royaume, vers 1240, et étendu au cours des règnes suivants, Wat Mahatat était réservé aux dévotions de la famille royale. Wat Sa Sri fait une photo ravissante, avec ses proportions élégantes et son bel emplacement, démontrant les priorités esthétiques des constructeurs d'origine.
